What Is Pareto Analysis?

Pareto analysis is a prioritisation technique that ranks problems, or their causes, by size, so effort goes to the few that cause most of the damage. It rests on the Pareto principle, the common observation that roughly eighty percent of effects trace back to about twenty percent of causes.
The idea traces to the economist Vilfredo Pareto and was carried into quality work by Joseph Juran, who framed it as the vital few causes against the trivial many. On a plant floor it is applied to things like downtime data or defect categories: tally each reason, order them most to least frequent, and a handful usually drive the bulk of the loss. Fixing those first returns far more than working the list in arrival order.
Two things get run together here. Pareto analysis is the reasoning; a Pareto chart is the picture it produces, bars falling from tallest to shortest with a line tracking the running total, so the point where the vital few give way to the many is easy to see. It also sits a step ahead of root cause work: it flags which problem is worth attention, while a tool like the five whys explains why it keeps happening. And unlike a plain bar chart, the sorting is the whole point: an unordered tally hides the pattern the technique exists to reveal.
The technique goes wrong when the counting is careless. Rank by how often something happens and a swarm of trivial, quick to clear events can outrank the rare stoppage that costs the most, and a plant ends up busy on the wrong problem. Frequency is the right axis only when every event carries similar weight; where it does not, ranking by cost or downtime minutes gives the honest picture. The other trap is treating the chart as the finish, when naming the top bar changes nothing until someone works the cause behind it.
EviView builds the Pareto view straight from live production and downtime data, so the vital few are ranked without exporting a spreadsheet, and the top cause can be handed to an owner and closed out on the same board. Book a demo to see your losses ranked by what they really cost.
