What Is EHS Incident Management?

EHS incident management is the process a manufacturer uses to capture, investigate, and resolve environment, health, and safety events, from near misses to injuries and spills, so each one is recorded, acted on, and used to prevent the next. It covers the whole path from the moment something happens on the floor to the corrective action that finally closes it out.

The events that teach the most are often the ones that hurt nobody. A near miss is a free lesson: the chain of conditions that nearly caused an injury will eventually cause one if nothing changes. So a programme’s health shows less in how it handles a serious injury than in how many small things get reported and resolved before they escalate.

It helps to separate incident management from incident reporting. Reporting is only the first step, capturing that something happened. Management is the full loop: triaging the event, investigating the root cause, assigning a corrective action with an owner, verifying it worked, and watching for the same thing across other shifts and lines. Plenty of plants have reporting and still have no management, because the reports land somewhere and stop.

This is also where leading and lagging indicators matter. Injury rates are lagging; they tell you what already went wrong. Reported hazards, safety observations, and near misses are leading; they tell you what’s about to. A programme that only counts injuries reads the scoreboard after the game, while one that captures the leading signals can still act in time.

Where EHS incident management breaks down is usually friction and follow-through. If reporting means a paper form and a walk to the office, near misses go unlogged.
